Date : 5th December 2009 saturday Venue : Oldest existing Fire station in SG - Central Fire station (near cityhall) Purpose : Have a little tour around the firestation.. Get to know more about SCDF! :) Organised by 24seven :)  Here are the people who went with me.. The guy on the left is Kris from 24seven and the rest of us are bloggers! Not to forget - LTA Foo from SCDF for being our guide around the station! :) below are some of the photos i have grabbed from Kris.. (lazy to organize them into the post below.. So i shall just put it on top of this entry..) Here's our superb guide - LTA Foo A guy, full of rescuing experiences and not to forget his sense of humor.. LOL..  Us listening attentively.. HAHA..   Guess what is this for..? (shall reveal it later)  Got a cute little souvenier from them.. It's a handphone pouch..HAHA.. cant tell right.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Okay, i shall go into details now.. Let me share with you what i have learned from LTA Foo that day! SCDF actually does more than just getting rid of fire..   Above are some tools used for prying open any gates/door in times of emergency.. He told us that those actions(kicking damn hard to open the door) shown in movie/tv shows are really nonsense.. hahaha..You really need some of this equipments to open up those locked doors! Firemen particularly like the tools on the right (called: RABBIT tool) It was named RABBIT because the tool somehow looked like a rabbit foot.. -.-"  Here are some of the tools(cutting & etc) used for rescuing passengers from a wrecked car (accident). Also, mentioned by our guide.. If you want to change your car to a convertible, you can find them too.. They are able to change it within mins! hahahha! (thats a joke btw)  Kris get to try how heavy the cutter is.. The girls including me, didnt wanna hold it cause the handle seems greasy..LOL  Various sizes of water hose..  Here we have 2 type of hose here.. (i forgot the diameter alrdy..6mm and 14mm?) And i cant really remember the purpose of having the difference in size eh.. I THINK the smaller one is used for charging and attacking(extinguishing) the fire and the big one is for connecting from the fire hydrant/fire engine and to the other pumper over longer distances.. Below are some various ways of jumping the pole..   Left : Singapore style jump (created by our fellow firemen long time ago.. LOL) -Only used in sg! Right: Bear hug (standard way of sliding down the pole) -used in many countries   More of our Singapore style.. Below : Our guide instructed them to do this "performance" just for us bloggers.. Weeeee.~ I think it is called the stacking style.. hahahha no lah.. crap one..  Tadaaaaa~ 4 firemen hanging on the pole ..   Back for more - introducing of the items on the fire engine.. Left: those dummies are called John. Used by SCDF during training..  Those yellow stuffs are blanket/canvas if im not wrong..  Here we have the exhaust fan.. Used to extract out smoke and etc..  This looks like some diving equipment hor? Firemen uses this to enter into burning building to rescue people! A source of oxygen to them..They can also use this to go underwater, but only for a short while..   and once again, we got kris to wear the mask HAHA! Our guide showed us how this mask can actually protect them too.. In order to prevent smoke from entering into the mask, they have this function and that is : oxygen will gush out of the mask to prevent smoke from entering (if there happens to be a gap)..   We carried it to test how heavy it is again.. I can say, its not light man.. How can they carry this and carry another person out of the building sia.. Not to mention, they have to crawl under rubbles or collapsed walls/columns to get to the victims.. lol.. Really salute them sia!     Remember the question i asked you - regarding what is this equipment for? It is actually used to locate victims trapped in buildings and etc.. They are able to detect human body heat..So, it's of no problem even in a burning building! Technology ah technology.. You are so usefullll yoo..  the vehicle inside is used for travelling on both road and water.. Heard that there are many cases of people falling into the clarke quay river after drinking.. and about 80% of the cases are death cases.. damn sad..  This sprays out mist to cool down fire.. Smaller particle, higher surface area of contact with the fire.. thus enabling to cool down the fire effectively..(if im not wrong) heh  My turn to play with it~  And the gun is dripping water like mad..   Left: they uses water hose to form queue lines.. haha  This is heavy!! (for me at least) But its fun tho :)    This is located at the back of the fire engine.. The fire engine has got a on board water reservoir- purpose is to use the water from the tank first while the firemen are searching for the fire hydrant.. or is used when there are no fire hydrant available nearby..   While on the way to the location, firemen got to change into their full gear in this small area(on the fire engine) within 1 min! So the next time you spot a fire engine, maybe u will spot them busy changing inside.. hahaha    Left: that container is used for collecting any evidence or possible items that could have lead to the cause of the fire ..Just like CSI! Their job doesnt ends when the fire is being put out, they have to remain on scene and find out the cause of it.. Right: that is the full gear those firemen have got to change into while in the fire engine.. (must include the boots too)   Here we have Trixy who are having trouble trying to slot her legs(including her boots) into the pants.. hhahhaa..It was tough getting it in man! But after forcing her way in, she managed to slot it in.. And taking it out is another problem..heh   Left: we didnt manage to get up on to the aerial ladder platform(i think) due to bad weather.. Sad.. I was looking forward to it loh! can get to see the view from about 10 storey high.. Right: In the end, we went up to this ambulance.. And the paramedic explained to us the equipment they have on board..  And yep. Thats about it.. Just nice it started to rain damn heavily.. Took a Group picture(as you have seen above) and went to their office and have a little round up session with our guide.. It was quite an interesting visit for me~ Got to know better about the life of our unsung heroes of singapore.. While we are asleep, they are up and awake - rescuing people from all over Singapore! Thanks for the trip! :) And to those people who wanna have a visit to our local central fire station, you may want to visit them on any SATURDAY (around 9am - 12pm).. No registration needed..It's FREEEE! :) |
